Charles was born and educated in Yugoslavia, now Croatia. He emigrated from the UK to Australia in his late twenties, living in Sydney from 1959 to 1970, when he moved to Melbourne pursuing a business career. In the mid sixties Charles painted and exhibited in Sydney, but due to family and business commitments stopped painting for the next twenty years. At the end of 1990 he took an early retirement and committed himself to full time painting.

Charles mainly paints in oil, although he has also done a considerable amount of work in charcoal, pastel, acrylics, as well as in mixed media, sculpture and stained glass. His subjects vary from nudes to landscapes and from representational to abstract.
